The Newman lab is located within the Department of Cell Biology in the University of Virginia School of Medicine.
Postdocs and staff scientists: We are not currently hiring.
Graduate students: Admission is handled through the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program (BIMS) at UVA. We are not accepting rotation students for the 2026-2027 school year.
Undergraduate researchers: Applications from undergraduates are welcome. Please follow the application instrutions below carefully. Applications that are missing these elements WILL NOT be considered. Please be advised that this lab will not be the right fit for everyone, owing to the fact that the particular experimental methods that we rely upon require significant time and practice to gain competency. For this reason, applications need to convey a willingness to commit to multiple semesters of research, or a summer position in addition to semester research.
In your application, please include 1) A cover letter, 2) A transcript of relevant coursework, 3) A CV or resume. In your cover letter, please include the following information:
1) Your motivation for pursuing research, how your scientific interests overlap with our lab’s research, and what you hope you gain from working in the Newman lab;
2) Your career goals and how working in the Newman lab will help you on your journey to that career (it’s ok if you’re not completely sure, but provide a general direction);
3) Your proposed weekly schedule for research for the upcoming semester, stating how many hours per week you would like to spend in the lab (for an average week);
4) A list of your current classes and other extracurricular committments, with hours/week allocated for each, and explain how you plan to balance research alongside these;
5) How many semesters or years you would like to pursue research in the Newman lab.
